About one year after the onset of periods, a woman starts ovulating, and it is when she becomes capable of conceiving a baby. However, it is not the right age for conception. With that said, we would like to state that fertility in women naturally decreases with their increasing age. According to Dr. Sushmita Mukherjee, the chances of conception and delivering a healthy baby remain high around the age of 30 years. However, today a large number of women are getting pregnant even at a growing age.

Can women conceive at the age of 50?

Menopause starts between the age of 40 and 50 years. Hence, there is a very small chance of successful conception at the age of 50. Conception at an older age may also bring many complications, for example, gestational diabetes (diabetes mellitus in pregnancy), hypertension, pre-term delivery, stillbirth and that’s just the beginning, say Dr. Sushmita Mukherjee (Obstetrics and Gynecologist). Women who want to get pregnant at the age of 50 or beyond may need to opt for IVF (In Vitro Fertilization).

Why does women’s fertility decline after normal gestational age?

Hormonal imbalance and blockage in the fallopian tube are the main cause that declines fertility in women after normal gestational age.

Can IVF help you become pregnant at the age of 50?

Yes. With the onset of menopause in women, the formation of eggs stops, and the womb shrinks. There are certain injections that can eliminate the contractions of the womb. But, you will still need eggs from a donor to achieve pregnancy through IVF. Eggs received from a donor will be fertilized with the sperm of your partner in a lab and placed in your woman thereafter.

What is the success rate of pregnancy through IVF over 50 years of age?

There are many factors, on which, the success of pregnancy through IVF depends upon, for example, a woman’s accurate age, pre-existing medical conditions, the quality of sperm, and, most importantly, the expertise of your IVF specialist.

Final Words:

The chances of getting pregnant decrease with age, but it is not impossible to become pregnant. If you are thinking about pregnancy planning at the age of 40–50, then visit the doctor once and follow his advice.
